On 23 January 2013, the Air National Guard announced the winners for the highly coveted Air Force Organizational Excellence Award. The Air Force Organizational Excellence Award recognizes units for exceptionally meritorious service or outstanding achievement.

The superb performance of the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC) resulted in their selection as one of eight units to receive the 2012 Air Force Organizational Excellence Award. To be nominated for the award, the unit must have demonstrated tremendous accomplishments in their mission, inspection results, community involvement, deployments, readiness and awards and honors over a specified time frame.

In announcing the win to the CRTC base personnel, Col Bryan Teff, commander, stated, "Your outstanding work and commitment to our mission is something you should be proud of. I know that I am very thankful for the outstanding team we have in Alpena. Thanks for everything you do for the Alpena CRTC."

The Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center clearly exceeded their mission: to provide premier support, facilities, instruction and airspace to DOD, DHS, Coalition and emergency responders to meet the mission requirements of Combatant Commanders and Civil Authorities. The CRTC planned and executed a multitude of flight and ground training scenarios that were instrumental in ensuring optimal readiness to visiting units by providing outstanding support to 32,000 personnel from 488 units resulting in the execution of over 152,000 training days.

The CRTC spear headed and hosted the first ever Air National Guard sponsored exercise in the state of Michigan - Northern Strike 2012. 19 units from 7 different states and two coalition partners participated in the 14 day exercise.

Members of the CRTC received various awards to include Air Family Readiness Group of the Year, Air Family Support Group Volunteer of the Year, State Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year and State First Sergeant of the Year.
