Tuition Assistance for Michigan National Guard passes House and Senate
LANSING, Mich. -Michigan National Guard members seeking higher education will soon have financial assistance to help fund it thanks to House bill 5451. The bill cleared the Michigan Senate Thursday afternoon with a unanimous 38 - 0 vote. Later in the day, the House of Representatives took its turn and voted 109 - 0. The bill will now go to Gov. Rick Snyder for his signature. Snyder proposed a fiscal year 2015 budget that would provide tuition assistance for eligible military personnel. "For the Michigan National Guard, this boils down to readiness," said Maj. Gen. Gregory Vadnais, the adjutant general and director of the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. "This is a tremendous tool for our team to recruit and retain the best and brightest Soldiers and Airmen." The bill was sponsored by State Representative Bruce Rendon (District 103) and will provide yearly tuition assistance to qualified Michigan National Guard members attending Michigan colleges, universities and vocational schools. "Our Soldiers and Airmen have served honorably and deserve the chance to pursue a higher education," said Vadnais. "This is also beneficial for members who decide to transition out of the military and back into Michigan's civilian work force."
